Foreshortening means drawing an object in a way that makes it look three-dimensional, even though it is drawn on a flat piece of paper. Cartoonists use foreshortening to make things in the foreground seem bigger than things in the background.

Using foreshortening correctly can help to make your cartoons much more dramatic.

Larger foreground

Smaller background

We are looking at this girl from a high angle. As she stretches upwards, the flower and the hand that is holding it appear large in comparison to the rest of her body. Her feet are the furthest part away from us, so appear very small.

Increasing the size of things in the foreground can also add dramatic effect to action scenes. Here I’ve used two sporting examples to illustrate this.
